Abstract
The paper examines the living conditions and socio-economic status of shifting cultivators in Tripura. It finds that shifting cultivation is largely subsistence farming for tribal communities, with low output and income, inadequate housing, sanitation and drinking water facilities, food insecurity and limited access to resources. Climate change and declining rainfall are affecting production and income, while children of shifting cultivators experience high dropout rates. The study recommends alternative livelihood policies for these marginalized communities.
